According to the outright betting market, Barcelona are the team to beat. Their price of 6.00 puts them narrowly ahead of Arsenal and defending champions Paris Saint-Germain, with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid completing an exceptionally tight group of favorites.
The NerdyTips AI model reaches a different conclusion.
After using the betting market as an important starting point and then adjusting the probabilities for recent European performance, squad quality, tactical stability, attacking and defensive strength, depth, knockout experience and the structure of the tournament itself, Arsenal emerge as our most likely Champions League winners with a probability of 17.11%.
Bayern Munich follow closely at 15.95%, while bookmaker favorites Barcelona remain firmly among the leading candidates at 13.42%. Manchester City are another significant mover in our analysis, rising considerably above the probability implied by their outright price, while Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid receive slightly more conservative projections.
This distinction matters. Betting odds contain enormous amounts of useful information, but they are prices rather than pure football predictions. They also incorporate bookmaker margins, betting demand and public sentiment. A club with a huge global following can attract money for reasons that extend beyond what happens on the pitch, while an efficient team with less public attention can sometimes be treated more cautiously by the market.

The outright prices used as the market baseline were available on 9 September 2026.
Simply converting decimal odds into implied probabilities creates an immediate problem. When the prices of all 36 teams are converted using the standard 1 divided by odds formula, their combined probability is approximately 130.7%.
Thirty-six clubs clearly cannot collectively have a 130.7% chance of winning one trophy. The difference reflects the considerable bookmaker margin contained within the outright market.
Our first step is therefore to normalize those implied probabilities back to 100%. This creates a more useful estimate of how the betting market distributes the title race before the additional NerdyTips adjustments are applied.

The most important conclusion is not simply that Arsenal occupy first place. It is how competitive the leading group remains.
Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid account for almost three quarters of the championship probability in our model. There is a clear elite tier, but there is no dominant team inside it.
Even Arsenal win only around 17 times in every 100 comparable simulated tournaments. In other words, the NerdyTips model considers Arsenal more likely to win than any individual rival, while simultaneously considering the combined field far more likely to produce somebody else.
That is not a contradiction. It is exactly how probability works.
Why Arsenal are the AI favorite instead of Barcelona
The strongest positive adjustment in the NerdyTips model belongs to Arsenal, whose normalized market probability of 11.77% rises to 17.11%.
The most persuasive argument for Arsenal is that we already have unusually strong evidence of how well this team can handle the Champions League format.
During the 2025/26 league phase, Arsenal won all eight of their matches, scoring 23 goals and conceding only four. They became the first club to produce a perfect eight-win league phase under the expanded format, with notable results including a 4:0 victory over Atletico Madrid, a 3:1 win against Bayern Munich and a 3:1 away victory against Inter.
The campaign did not then collapse at the first knockout obstacle. Arsenal continued through Bayer Leverkusen, Sporting CP and Atletico Madrid before facing Paris Saint-Germain in the Budapest final.
That match finished 1:1 and PSG eventually won 4:3 on penalties. Arsenal’s official Champions League record for the season therefore ended at 15 matches played, 11 wins, four draws and no defeats before the shootout.
That detail is particularly important when thinking about the following season. There is a major difference between a team that looks theoretically capable of winning the Champions League and a team that has already demonstrated an ability to navigate virtually the entire competition without losing a match.
Arsenal’s current squad also gives the model several reasons for confidence. Bukayo Saka, Viktor Gyokeres and Christos Tzolis provide attacking options, while Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, Bruno Guimaraes, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi create remarkable depth through midfield. William Saliba, Gabriel, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori and other high-level defensive options give Mikel Arteta several ways to structure the team according to the opponent.
This is particularly valuable in Europe because knockout football rewards flexibility. The best route through one tie may require aggressive pressing and territorial control; the next may demand patience, defensive discipline and the ability to protect a narrow advantage away from home.
Arsenal demonstrated many of those qualities last season.
The 17.11% projection is therefore not based on the simplistic assumption that last season’s runner-up must automatically improve. It reflects the fact that Arsenal have recently shown an unusual combination of defensive stability, control, depth and consistency against elite European opposition.
Their advantage remains small, but for now it is enough to put them first.
Bayern Munich may be Arsenal’s most dangerous rival
Bayern Munich sit only 1.16 percentage points behind Arsenal at 15.95%, considerably above the 10.93% probability produced by their normalized market odds.
From a squad perspective, Bayern possess virtually every characteristic associated with a Champions League contender.
Harry Kane remains the focal point of the attack, but the threat around him is diverse. Jamal Musiala can create advantages between defensive lines, Michael Olise provides both creativity and one-versus-one quality, while Luis Diaz and Serge Gnabry offer further attacking variation.
Behind them, Joshua Kimmich remains central to Bayern’s ability to control matches. Their defensive group contains considerable experience, while Manuel Neuer is still part of the Champions League squad at the age of 40.
Depth matters more in a prediction covering nine months than it does in an isolated match. Suspensions, fatigue and injuries are almost guaranteed to affect every contender before the final, so the probability of winning the competition is partly a question of how much quality remains when the first-choice eleven is unavailable.
Bayern score particularly well in that area.
They also came extremely close to reaching last season’s final. Their semi-final against PSG produced an extraordinary 6:5 aggregate score, which is a useful reminder of how small the margins can become once the best teams in Europe meet.
The NerdyTips model gives Arsenal a slight advantage in defensive reliability and recent tournament consistency, but the difference between 17.11% and 15.95% should not be interpreted as a substantial gap.
A strong league phase from Bayern could easily reverse the order.
Barcelona are the bookmaker favorites, but not the NerdyTips favorites
Barcelona create the clearest difference between conventional market ranking and our AI prediction.
Their price of 6.00 makes them the shortest-priced club in the outright market. After the bookmaker margin is removed, that corresponds to a championship probability of approximately 12.75%.
Interestingly, NerdyTips does not downgrade Barcelona. Our model actually increases their probability slightly to 13.42%.
They remain an elite candidate.
We simply rate Arsenal and Bayern marginally higher.
Barcelona’s attacking potential is obvious. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha headline a forward group that also contains Gabriel Jesus, Karim Adeyemi, Anthony Gordon and Dani Olmo. In midfield, Pedri, Gavi, Rodri and Frenkie de Jong give Hansi Flick a remarkable collection of technical quality and different passing profiles.
On pure attacking ceiling, Barcelona may be capable of producing stretches of football that no other club in the tournament can comfortably contain.
But Champions League winner probability is not determined exclusively by ceiling. A team needs repeatability.
The eventual champion may have to protect a one-goal advantage for half an hour away from home, survive a poor first leg, adjust when a key attacker is unavailable or find a different route to goal when an opponent successfully blocks its preferred attacking patterns.
The model therefore asks not only how brilliant Barcelona can be when everything works, but how frequently they can survive the nights when it does not.
That is the small distinction currently keeping them third.
With 13.42%, however, Barcelona still win more than one in every eight simulated competitions. Calling them anything other than a leading contender would be misleading.
Manchester City could be the most undervalued superclub
Manchester City’s position may be the most interesting market disagreement in the entire table.
Their 10.00 outright price becomes a normalized title probability of only 7.65%. The NerdyTips model raises that number to 10.89%, placing City fourth overall and much closer to Barcelona than their odds initially suggest.
There is more uncertainty around City than around several of the other leading teams. Pep Guardiola’s decade in charge has ended and Enzo Maresca now leads a squad that has undergone substantial change.
But uncertainty can work in both directions.
City’s Champions League squad still contains Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku, while Enzo Fernandez, Elliot Anderson and Mateo Kovacic provide midfield options. Gianluigi Donnarumma, Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol give the team considerable quality at the other end of the pitch.
The central question is how quickly the new version of Manchester City reaches its ceiling.
This matters because Champions League winner predictions made in September are not really predictions about how good a team is in September. They are predictions about how likely that team is to still be winning knockout matches in March, April and May.
A side undergoing changes has months to evolve before the decisive stages.
If City’s structure develops quickly and Haaland remains available for the biggest ties, a probability below 8% appears too pessimistic to our model.
At 10.89%, they remain clearly behind Arsenal and Bayern, but the difference between City and Barcelona is far smaller than the outright market suggests.
Can Paris Saint-Germain win three Champions Leagues in a row?
Paris Saint-Germain provide one of the great storylines of the 2026/27 season.
PSG have won the previous two Champions League titles. Their 2025/26 campaign was particularly revealing because they finished only 11th in the league phase and therefore had to survive the additional knockout playoff before eventually becoming champions.
Their route included Monaco, Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern Munich before the penalty shootout victory against Arsenal in Budapest.
That is an extraordinary sequence of opponents.
It is also an excellent example of why tournament forecasting is so difficult. A champion does not necessarily need to dominate every phase of the competition. It needs to survive.
PSG’s market price of 6.50 produces a normalized probability of 11.77%, while the NerdyTips model is more cautious at 8.95%.
The reduction should not be interpreted as a suggestion that PSG are no longer one of Europe’s strongest teams. Instead, it reflects the extraordinary cumulative difficulty of what they are attempting.
Imagine a team has a 60% probability of surviving each of three elite knockout ties. A 60% chance in an individual matchup sounds reasonably strong, but the probability of winning all three consecutive ties is only 21.6%.
Add a final against another elite opponent and the number falls again.
That mathematical reality is one reason consecutive Champions League titles are so rare. PSG have already overcome it twice. Winning for a third consecutive season would place this team in exceptional historical territory.
Our simulations certainly contain that outcome. They simply produce Arsenal, Bayern, Barcelona and Manchester City as champions more frequently.
How much should Real Madrid’s Champions League history matter?
Real Madrid are perhaps the hardest team in Europe to evaluate using a purely probabilistic approach.
Their record in this competition is unmatched, and repeatedly describing famous European comebacks as mere luck would miss something important. Experience, confidence, squad quality and familiarity with extreme pressure are genuine football characteristics.
The difficulty is determining how much they should be worth.
Real Madrid’s 7.00 outright price gives them the same normalized market probability as Bayern Munich at approximately 10.93%. The NerdyTips model is more conservative, placing Madrid at 8.56%.
That is still an enormous probability in a 36-team tournament.
The model simply attempts to separate the useful information contained inside Real Madrid’s reputation from the reputation itself.
Past trophies matter because many of the characteristics that created them can remain present: high-level players, institutional expectations, European experience and the ability to make good decisions under pressure.
Past trophies do not, however, directly influence whether a shot hits the inside or outside of the post in a 2027 quarter-final.
For that reason, Real Madrid remain firmly inside our leading group without receiving an additional historical premium large enough to move them alongside Arsenal and Bayern.
Of all the projections in the table, this may be the one most capable of making an algorithm look foolish. Champions League history contains plenty of evidence that writing off Real Madrid is rarely comfortable.
Liverpool and Inter lead the teams outside the main group
The probability curve begins to fall noticeably after the leading six.
Liverpool occupy seventh place at 5.93%, slightly above their normalized market probability of 5.10%. That makes them a serious challenger rather than a conventional outsider.
A probability around 6% can sound small until it is translated into tournament terms. It represents approximately one title in every 17 comparable scenarios.
For a competition containing clubs such as Arsenal, Bayern, Barcelona, Manchester City, PSG and Real Madrid, that is meaningful.
Manchester United follow at 3.40%, close to the 3.64% suggested by their normalized price. The model sees enough quality for a deep run but currently lacks enough evidence to place them alongside the primary contenders.
Inter Milan are more interesting from a probability-versus-price perspective.
Their 34.00 odds translate into only 2.25% after normalization, but NerdyTips gives them a 3.01% chance. Proportionally, that is one of the larger positive adjustments outside the favorite group.
Inter’s profile is exactly the type that can be underrated in an outright market. Tournament success is not always about having the most spectacular collection of attackers. Teams capable of controlling space, protecting leads and remaining tactically disciplined across two legs can survive knockout matches against more fashionable opponents.
A 3% chance still means Inter fail to win in roughly 97 out of every 100 simulations.
But unlikely and irrelevant are not the same thing.
Why Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Napoli still matter
Below Inter, the title probabilities become significantly smaller.
Borussia Dortmund lead this group at 1.75%, followed by Atletico Madrid at 1.36%, Napoli at 1.26% and Roma at 1.07%.
Those numbers can appear almost insignificant beside Arsenal’s 17.11%, yet Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate why a 1% probability should never be confused with zero.
A team with a 1% championship probability would still win roughly 100 times if the same tournament could somehow be replayed 10,000 times.
The real problem for a dark horse is cumulative difficulty.
Borussia Dortmund are perfectly capable of defeating one of the favorites in a particular tie. So are Atletico Madrid or Napoli. The harder challenge is eliminating several elite teams consecutively.
Suppose an outsider had a relatively generous 35% probability of progressing from its Round of 16 tie, another 35% chance in the quarter-final and the same chance again in the semi-final.
The probability of surviving all three rounds would be only around 4.3%.
There would still be a final to play.
This explains why outright probabilities decline so sharply outside the leading clubs. The model is not asking whether Atletico Madrid can beat Barcelona.
It is asking whether Atletico can potentially beat Barcelona, then Bayern, then Manchester City and then Arsenal.
Those are very different questions.
Why the 36-team Champions League format changes the prediction
The 2026/27 competition is the third Champions League season played under UEFA’s expanded league-phase format.
There are 36 teams and 144 league-phase matches, with every club facing eight different opponents in single matches rather than playing three group opponents home and away.
Each team plays four matches at home and four away, with opponents drawn across the different seeding pots.

Avoiding the playoff therefore increases a team’s title probability even if its fundamental playing strength does not change.
This partly explains why Arsenal’s perfect league phase last season was so valuable. It was not simply an impressive statistical achievement. It removed one complete elimination round from their route towards the final.
The 2026/27 league phase continues until 27 January, with the knockout playoffs following in February, the Round of 16 in March, quarter-finals in April and semi-finals across late April and early May.
By then, the percentages in this article should look very different.

Why the best team can still be unlikely to win the Champions League
The most counterintuitive result in the entire analysis may be Arsenal’s 17.11%.
How can a team be the favorite if the model believes it has an 82.89% chance of not winning the competition?
The answer lies in the structure of knockout football.
Imagine the strongest team in Europe reaches the quarter-finals and has a 60% chance of progressing in each of its remaining three rounds.
A 60% probability in one tie represents a meaningful advantage.
But winning all three consecutively requires multiplying those probabilities:
0.60 × 0.60 × 0.60 = 21.6%
Even a team strongly favored in every remaining round would therefore fail to become champion in almost four out of five equivalent scenarios.
If each tie were closer to 55-45, the probability of winning all three falls to approximately 16.6%.
That number is remarkably close to Arsenal’s current full-tournament projection.
Football’s relatively low scoring makes this effect even stronger. A penalty, red card, deflection, goalkeeper mistake or brilliant individual finish can completely alter a tie in a way that is harder to recover from than it would be across a 38-game domestic season.
A league gives elite teams months to correct mistakes.
The Champions League eventually gives them 90 or 180 minutes.
A realistic AI model should never attempt to remove that randomness. It should build it into the prediction.
All roads eventually lead to Madrid
Thousands of different tournament paths can be simulated, but each one eventually ends in the same place.
The 2027 Champions League final will be played on Saturday, 5 June 2027 at Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano.

Only one of those possible versions will actually happen.
