Athletic Club vs Alaves prediction and betting preview
Our Athletic Club vs Alaves prediction focuses on a Basque derby that should combine home pressure, defensive discipline and plenty of physical battles. Mark your calendars for September 19, 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 15:15 GMT at San Mamés in Bilbao.
Form, tactics and team news
This Matchday 7 fixture is Athletic’s first Basque derby of the 2026/27 La Liga season. Edin Terzić, the former Borussia Dortmund coach, has guided the hosts through three league games without defeat, collecting two wins and one draw. Last weekend’s 1-1 home draw with Elche felt like a missed chance, but Athletic had extra recovery time after their match against Levante was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
Terzić is likely to ask Athletic to control the ball, push their full-backs forward and attack Alaves through wide areas. San Mamés usually encourages an aggressive approach, although the possible absence of Iñaki Williams would reduce the home side’s speed in transition. Williams is doubtful with a foot and muscle problem, while Gorka Guruzeta, Peio Canales and Unai Eguiluz are unavailable. Dani Vivian has returned to training and may strengthen the defence.
There has also been noise away from the pitch. Athletic’s players, led by Unai Simón, recently staged a media boycott over cost-cutting measures introduced by president Jon Uriarte. Terzić has kept a positive public tone, describing the Elche draw as another step forward rather than a setback. Football dressing rooms have survived stranger weeks, but three points would certainly improve the mood.
Alaves began strongly under Quique Sánchez Flores, August’s La Liga Coach of the Month, taking 10 points from their opening four matches. Momentum has since slowed. A 2-1 defeat at Racing Santander was followed by Tuesday’s 1-0 home loss against Valencia. The short turnaround gives the visitors less preparation time than Athletic.
The away team’s defensive options are also stretched. Mikel Rodríguez and Facundo Garcés suffered right-knee ACL injuries within five days of each other and could miss six to eight months. Alaves may therefore defend in a compact block, protect central areas and search for counterattacks or set pieces. Sánchez Flores has admitted that small details will decide many games, and this derby looks like exactly that sort of afternoon.
